It’s the second month of the year, and things haven’t slowed down a bit. From award season, Valentine’s day, celebrity moms, Black History Month, health news, and movie releases, here’s an overview of what went down this month.
Jeans – Women are always on the search for the perfect pair of jeans, but they may be in luck for more options with Sofia Vergara dropping her denim line at Walmart this month. Sofia Jeans are size inclusive ranging from a size 0 to size 20. And they’re all under $30, with varying styles and colors that are must-adds to your closet. Check them out at your local Walmart or online.
Valentine’s/Galentine’s Day Garb – Whether or not the day of love went the way you wanted it to, it’s never too late to do some self-loving with shopping. Buying some flowers, clearance chocolate, a bottle of wine (grab a straw, since dishes aren’t fun), take a bath with a bathtub caddy so you can Netflix binge while mindlessly snacking, and afterward throw on a clearance t-shirt with a witty love saying and snuggle up to a clearance plush toy if your partner isn’t available. Yeah, clearance is your friend this time of year, take advantage of it.
Black History Month – Target debuted their Black History Month t-shirts, and yes, it’s for the whole family. From babies to adults, the t-shirt designs subtly showcase pride in black historical figures and symbols. They’re on clearance online and in store, so try and score one while you still can!
Flu season has been mild so far. But it looks like a more severe strain is being reported, so get ready for the flu season to potentially last until May. Watch for every cough and sneeze your little one may have and it’s never too late to get vaccinated so that the symptoms can be less severe.
There’s more news about breast pumping. A new study released by Cell Host & Microbe revealed: “pumped milk is associated with the depletion of oral bacteria and a higher abundance of potential pathogens compared with direct breastfeeding at the breast.” The bacteria found in breast pumped milk aren’t too harmful, but they do increase the chance of pediatric asthma in infants. Don’t stop breast pumping if it’s something you have to do, but this information is useful to know for moms and breastfeeders.
Climate change is increasing the probability of boys being born over girls. A study by the M&K Health Institute in Japan concluded that “male concepti are especially vulnerable to external stress factors including climate changes and warrant further investigation of how stress factors may affect the male:female ratio of newborn infants.” Other stress factors could be hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes, and other natural disasters. In the United States, the weather has definitely been stressful with wildfires, floods, polar vortexes, and hurricanes over the last year, so this study is an interesting read that gets you thinking.
Cardi B – She’s definitely been taking over pop culture for a while now, but this month has been filled with her. Early in the month, Cardi revealed a different side of herself when she got candid about her postpartum depression in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, stating “–out of nowhere, the world was heavy on my shoulders.”
From that emotional dip to the Grammy awards, Cardi B stunned in a dress that mimicked an oyster shell on the red carpet before she performed her recent hit single “Money.” To top off the night, Cardi B became the first solo female artist to win the award for best rap album for her debut record Invasion of Privacy.
Things can’t get any better for the mom of 7-month-old daughter, Kulture, right? Turns out her daughter wanted to one-up her Grammy win by finally saying the word “mama.” Cardi B took to Instagram and shared the sweet moment with the caption, “After a week of only saying papa! She saying mama! Happy 7 months Kulture! We love you.”
Cheers to Cardi having a great month!
Spiderman: Into the Spider-Verse – Chances are you’ve already heard about the Spiderman movie featuring an Afro-Latino teen in New York named Miles Morales. But it recently rode a web into award season and nabbed every one of them. It won an Oscar, a Golden Globe, and went seven for seven at the Annie’s! This movie made $360 million at the box office for a reason, and it’s a fun time for the whole family. Due to its wins, select theatres are still playing the movie, and it’s now available for HD digital download.
Meghan Markle – The Duchess Sussex hasn’t let pregnancy stop her while she traveled with the Duke over this past month. She recently took a solo five-day trip to New York for a baby shower with a few of her close friends. One could assume the lavish gifts are unisex since Royal parents don’t find out the sex of the baby till they’re born. Now Meghan’s back on the job in Morocco with Prince Harry at her side before her estimated due date in April. We can’t wait for the new arrival!
Movies, Television, and Netflix, Oh My!
Movie trailers were plentiful this month. Basically, mark your calendars, you’re probably going to spend a lot of time in the movie theater this year. Release dates and trailers include Frozen 2, UglyDolls, Aladdin, Lion King, Dumbo, Detective Pikachu, Missing Link, The Angry Birds Movie 2, Penguins, Dora the Explorer, Secret Life of Pets 2, and even the future announcement of Space Jam 2 releasing in 2021. There’s more to be released throughout the year, so get your wallets ready!
Netflix is streaming really good stuff, releases from 2018 and some throwbacks. It’s streaming recent movie releases from last year like Black Panther, Incredibles 2, Coco, Cars 3, Christopher Robin, A Wrinkle in Time, and more. It’s even streaming the classics for the time being like Pocahontas, Mulan, Lilo & Stitch, Tarzan, Hercules, and others that you kids will gladly be glued to either on a sick day or for Spring Break.
Kid’s television also had a good month of news. SpongeBob SquarePants is coming up on its 20th anniversary, and in honor of hitting the milestone, Nickelodeon is going to feature a television special and tease potential spin-offs. The 2019 Kid’s Choice Awards announced the nominations and the host will be DJ Khalid. The award show won’t be till March 23rd, but remind your kids to vote for their nominations to have their voices heard! Also, Nickelodeon and Netflix are officially teaming up for movies for the hit series The Loud House and new popular series Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. And lastly, Cartoon Network also gave a teaser into their new show ‘Victor and Valentino’ this month, which features two half-brothers that go on adventures to explore Mesoamerican folklore. The release isn’t till March 30th, but it looks promising for the little ones that dig that stuff.
Overall, kids have a lot of great things coming their way throughout the year and in the future so there’s no way they won’t be entertained.
